You’re Not Lazy — Why Your Body Still Feels Tight

For a long time growing up, I thought I was just out of shape.

I remember struggling in gym class, trying to keep up when we had to run, and feeling completely out of breath almost right away. My chest would tighten, I’d slow down, and it felt like no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t keep going.

I was also a bigger kid — I remember having to shop in the “husky” section at Sears just to find clothes that fit.

And the message I heard over and over — from others, and eventually from myself — was:

“You’re just out of shape.” “You just need to exercise more.”

So I Tried to Fix It

I figured if I just worked harder, things would improve.

So I tried to exercise more.
I pushed myself more.
I told myself I just needed to get in better shape.

But here’s what I noticed:

The more I tried…
the worse it felt.

I wasn’t getting stronger.
I wasn’t building endurance.
I was just getting more frustrated.

When Effort Doesn’t Match Results

That’s one of the hardest places to be.

You’re doing what you’re supposed to do — and your body still isn’t responding.

That’s exactly how many people feel when they come into our clinic in Airdrie.

They’ll say things like:

  • “I’ve been stretching every day…”
  • “I’ve been trying to stay active…”
  • “I’m doing everything right, but my body still feels tight”

If you’ve ever wondered why your body feels tight even after rest, you’re not alone.

What I Eventually Found Out

After years of thinking I was just out of shape…

I found out I had asthma.

It wasn’t that I lacked effort.
It wasn’t that I wasn’t trying hard enough.

It was that I physically couldn’t breathe properly when I exercised.

And once I started treating it?

Everything changed.

I could move better.
I could actually build endurance.
I could finally get in shape.

The Real Problem Was Never Effort

It was a limitation I didn’t understand.

And now, I see a similar pattern in patients dealing with chronic tightness and back pain in Airdrie.

You’re Not Lazy — Your Body Is Just Stuck

When your body feels tight, stiff, or constantly sore, it’s easy to assume:

  • “I need to stretch more”
  • “I need to move more”
  • “I’m just getting older”
  • “I’m not doing enough”

But often, it’s not about effort.

It’s that your body is dealing with:

  • Restricted joints
  • Poor movement patterns
  • Compensation from old injuries
  • Subtle imbalances you can’t see

This is a common reason people experience ongoing back pain and stiffness, even when they’re trying to stay active.

Why It Keeps Coming Back

You might feel temporary relief after:

  • Stretching
  • Foam rolling
  • Resting

But if the underlying issue isn’t addressed, nothing actually changes. I would feel a bit better after exercising, thinking I was making gains, but I never was.

That’s why the tightness, stiffness, or discomfort keeps returning. That’s why I still could not breath properly with exercise. The problem was underlying.

The Shift That Changes Everything

The biggest shift isn’t: “Try harder.”

It’s: “Figure out what’s actually limiting you.”

Because once that limitation is addressed………..your body can finally respond the way it’s supposed to.

Just like when I was finally diagnosed with asthma.

When to Get It Checked

If you feel like:

  • Your body is always tight
  • You’re not progressing despite effort
  • You feel “off” more often than you should

It might not be a motivation problem.

It might be that your body is stuck.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my body feel tight even after stretching?

Tightness often comes from joint restriction or movement imbalance, not just muscle length.

Yes — underlying back pain can create ongoing muscle tension and stiffness.

If tightness keeps returning despite stretching or exercise, it’s worth getting assessed.

  • ½ Tbsp cooking sake or mirin (either works)

  • DIPPING SAUCE: 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 tsp rice vinegar, 1 tsp sesame oil

Directions

  • Heat up frying pan. Put ground meat, carrots, ½ of the green onions, garlic, sesame oil, sake/mirin, soy sauce, and ground pepper in a bowl. Mix well.

  • Using a small spoon, make a small ball and scoop onto tray lined with plastic wrap. Repeat until mixture is gone.

    Pre-made dumpling balls
  • Oil pan. Depending on size of pan, transfer some balls to they have ample space between them. Take dumpling wrappers and gently pinch on top of the balls. Add ½ cup of water to pan for cooking/steaming and cover pan. Cook for 6 minutes. Repeat until all dumplings are cooked.
