Clinic News
It is our last month before the summer finishes! I know, it is a tough pill to swallow, especially since we have not had the typical hot weather we enjoy, but at least we have not had the smoke that so commonly hits us every summer! And it has been great for the crops! Let’s keep looking at the positives! The Dr. B’s will be away August 28th and 29th taking their son to university. The clinic itself will be closed for Labour Day long weekend starting Friday, August 29th, at 12pm, through Monday, September 1st. Regular clinic hours resume Tuesday, September 2nd, at 8am.
Y-Strap Adjustment Dangers: Why These Viral Neck Pulls May Be Unsafe
I smile to myself when a patient starts off with the question “have you seen these adjustments on social media where they use these straps or towels?” Yes, yes indeed, they have been adorning my social media feed for MONTHS. And every time I see them I cringe because they are not standard practice and, in Alberta, they are actually outlawed by our college.
If you have seen these adjustments then you know what I am talking about. If you have not, this is how they go: with a patient lying down, using a strap or a towel wrapped around their head and under the chin, the chiropractor delivers a sudden aggressive pull upwards along the same. With a carefully placed microphone you can hear the loud ‘cracks’ and a sudden freaked out expression on the patient’s face and this garners millions of views.
The Y-strap technique creates a vigorous, rapid traction on your cervical spine (neck) and sometimes the entire spine. This kind of movement is difficult to accurately control in the range of motion, angle, and force. Your neck is a delicate area that, aside from vertebrae and discs, also contains major arteries, nerves, and ligaments.
Excessive or misguided force to the cervical spine can result in dangers like ligament strains and overstretching, disc herniations, joint instability, and nerve irritation.
The concept behind this type of adjustment is usually a philosophical one in that, the spine will automatically adjust itself wherever the restrictions may be. However this is not the case. Each spine is unique and different and this is very non-specific. No matter how exciting and theatrical they may seem, this is not a safe form of care and can never replace a thorough history, physical exam, and assessment to determine which segments of your spine need to be adjusted.
At our clinic you can expect that our adjustments are gentle and specific, customized to your particular health concern, evidence-based and clinically supported, and designed in mind with the most minimal risk.
While our doctors at our clinic may be considered ‘social media influencers’ by many (LOL), this is not a technique any of them will be using in their bag of tools!
Asian Glazed Turkey/Chicken Meatballs

ballsThis is one of our 'go to' recipes because it is flavourful, healthy, and super easy to make! And to make things easy, when it comes to adding the vegetables to the mix, I toss them in our mini food processor/chopper to save time!
Ingredients
2 pounds ground turkey or chicken
2 eggs
1 cup panko breadcrumbs
2 cloves minced garlic
2 green onions chopped
½ tsp minced ginger
1 of each: carrot, celery, mushroom, chopped
2 Tbsps oyster OR Hoisin sauce
rice or rice noodles
- Glaze/Sauce
½ cup Hoisin sauce
¼ cup soy sauce
¼ cup rice wine vinegar
½ Tbsp corn starch
1 cup water
1 tsp each: ginger, garlic
1 tsp sriracha sauce (optional)
Directions
Preheat oven to 375°F.
Saving half of the green onions for topping, mix all of the non-glaze ingredients together in a bowl. Using an ice cream scoop you can form approximately 30 meatballs that you can briefly fry on a pan (1 minute per side) and then transfer to a parchment lined tray for baking. You can also skip pan frying the meatballs and bake straight out. A neat tip is that you can use mini-muffin tins to separate each meatball! Bake for 15 minutes.
Combine all glaze/sauce ingredients together in a pot and cook over medium heat for 10 minutes stirring frequently. The sauce will thicken.
Once meatballs are cooked, put back into frying pan and add sauce. Mix. Serve on top of rice or rice noodles. Top with saved green onions. Enjoy!
