How to Stop Mindless Scrolling and Start Feeling Happier
Put your hand up if you use your phone for personal pleasure. Now put your hand up if you think that you (YES YOU!) use your phone too much for useless and time-wasting scrolling. Sure, that’s most of you. How does this happen? Most of the time you pickup your phone to check on a notification, but far too commonly you end up ‘doomscrolling’ after you have taken care of that business. Most experts state that it is not only a matter of time lost but it is bad for our mental and physical health.
Globally people spend 2 hours and 21 minutes per day on social media. Teens average minimum of 3 hours a day, most of the time that number is quite a bit more. 2.5 hours per day averages to about 36 days of the year just on social media scrolling. Imagine, over a MONTH of your year dedicated to social media trolling! It does not even seem like this could be real!
In brief, here are some of the negative effects social media scrolling has:
- mental: depression, anxiety, mood swings, and loneliness
- physical: lost sleep, poor concentration, decreased physical activity
- addictive: constant comparison to others is linked to low self-esteem, worthlessness, and envy.
But most of us know that staring at social media like this is not good for us, no different than most people who smoke know that it is bad for them and yet they still do it. So what can we do about this?
This article goes outside the box of traditional thinking. Yes, we know about screen time limits. We know about locking the phone away. We know about deleting apps. But we still somehow land back at the same spot. Social media. How do we fix this? He do we quit this? With any bad habit we have to look at small steps and this article is all about taking that first small step. Are you ready for it? Okay, here it is: scroll through your photo stream instead.
Social media is meant to be attention grabbing. There is infinite scrolling and algorithmic feeds that encourage passive prolonged consumption. The one underlying theme is that it is fake. People with lives better than yours with kids who are better than yours with cars that are better than yours with houses that are larger than yours with vacations to amazing places. Everyone is happier and richer and more chill than you are. They make money quickly. They get fit with minimal effort. They achieve overnight success. It’s all fake and it makes you feel inadequate and underperforming. BUT, what if you were to replace this with scrolling through your photo stream? Think about it.
Do you take pictures of good times? Of course you do. Do you take pictures of when you are on holidays? Yes, absolutely. Do you take pictures of important times in your life? Correct. Then why not scroll through your own life? When you have an inclination to spend time on your phone and ‘waste time’ scrolling, why don’t you do it in a beneficial way? Look at how many experiences and great times you’ve had. The trips you’ve gone on. The milestones your kids have reached. The memories you’ve created. This is real. And this is your life. There is no comparison to others. There is nothing fake. This is you and the emotions you evoke from scrolling are real.
And on those sad lonely days where the world is beating you up, you are going to scroll back randomly on your phone and you’re going to come across a picture or a video that will make you smile. And you don’t have to feel bad about it because this is your life, an experience that you had that made you happy. You’re living a beautiful life already, you don’t need to waste time comparing yourself to others. You’ll feel better about yourself and your life will be enriched by a memory that had already enriched you in the past, it’s just that you forgot about it until now!
Scrolling does not have to be a waste of time. If you are going to be on your phone NOT doing work, then put it to good use. You have an amazing life filled with awesome experiences. You’ve just forgotten how great it is. You don’t need to compare yourself to somebody else who likely isn’t posting what their real life actually is anyways. YOU set the standard for yourself!
