The Secret Way to Good Posture
POSTURE. This is a killer. For the spine at least. Poor posture, especially when we are talking about sitting at a computer desk or in class, is one of the biggest sources of spinal issues. Neck pain. Back pain. Headaches. Numbness. Tingling. All of them. The worst thing about bad posture is that we have almost no idea that we are promoting it AND it worsens with time. Poor posture leads to accentuated hunching, primarily in the upper back. You end up looking like the picture below. You’ll be rubbing the upper part of your back and asking “why is this bone sticking out so much? Why are these muscles so tight?”

BUT, here’s the good news. What if I told you there is a way that you can have better posture? What if I told you that it does not cost you any money? And it does not take any time out of your schedule? And it does not require you to do any exercises? Right now you are probably thinking “what is this snake-oil that you are selling?” The great news is that it is one of the absolute best ways to promote good posture at a sedentary desk job. Are you ready for this? How about a hint first:

Using a timer to go off every 15 minutes is a simple, easy, cheap, and effective tool for improving posture and reducing strain on your spine. That’s it. No magic. No gimmicks. Nothing tricky! Frequent reminders interrupt static patterns which definitely contribute to chronic neck and back strain. By simply having a ‘micro-break’, this breaks the continuous cycle of strain. And you do not need to do any exercise: sitting up straight, rolling your shoulders forward and back, and circling your head takes about 10 seconds to do. These ‘breaks’ or interruptions boost blood flow, lower joint stiffness, and prevent the kind of muscle fatigue that is painful and leads to injury through the workday. This initial postural correction may only last 10, 20, 30, or 40 seconds, maybe even more if you have good self-awareness, but you will quickly go back to your poor posture. However, imagine doing this daily for one or two months. Your posture will improve by 100% without having done a single exercise, spent a dime, or taken time away from your family. Just imagine: passive exercise while you work. Sounds like a dream to me!
The question is: how many of you (now that you have read this) are going to do it? I hope you all do!
