I Thought Everyone Felt Like This

It’s funny how easily we normalize things. Not because they’re healthy. Not because they’re normal. Simply because they’ve been around for so long that we stop questioning them.

I see this all the time with patients. And, if I’m being honest, I’ve done it myself.

The Things We Stop Noticing

Have you ever caught yourself saying things like:

  • “I always wake up stiff.”
  • “I’ve always had headaches.”
  • “My neck is always tight.”
  • “I just need to crack my back.”
  • “That’s just part of getting older.”

Most people don’t say these things because they’re concerned. They say them casually. Almost like they’re describing the weather.

Because when something happens every day, it starts to feel normal.

The Problem With "Normal"

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in practice is that common and normal are not the same thing.

Back pain is common. Headaches are common. Neck tension is common. Feeling exhausted at the end of the day is common.

But common doesn’t necessarily mean your body is functioning the way it should.

Think about it this way.

If your car made a strange noise every day for three years, eventually you’d stop noticing it. That doesn’t mean the noise belongs there. It just means you’ve gotten used to it.

Your body works the same way.

The Patient Conversation I Hear Every Week

Someone comes in because their back “went out.” Or because a headache finally became unbearable. Or because they woke up one morning and couldn’t turn their head.

As we talk, I’ll often ask:

“How long has this really been going on?”

The answer is usually surprising.

Not three days. Not three weeks. Three years. Sometimes ten. The severe pain was new. The underlying problem wasn’t. The body had been giving signals for a long time. Those signals just became normal.

This is similar to a story I shared recently in I Didn’t Realize Stress Could Feel Like This, where weeks of severe pain ended up having a much bigger story behind it.

Constant Tension Isn't Always Just Tension

One of the most common examples is neck tension.

Many people assume it’s caused by:

  • Stress
  • Work
  • Screens
  • Sleeping wrong

And sometimes that’s true. But persistent neck tension can also be related to:

  • Joint restriction
  • Poor movement patterns
  • Postural strain
  • Compensation from old injuries

Over time, the body adapts. It learns to function around the problem. Until one day it can’t anymore.

Chronic neck tension can also contribute to recurring headaches. If headaches are becoming part of your normal routine, learn more about our approach to Headaches & Migraines Treatment in Airdrie.

Just Because Everyone Has It Doesn't Mean You Should

Many symptoms become accepted because they’re common.

But your body shouldn’t constantly feel:

  • Tight
  • Restricted
  • Stiff
  • Sore
  • Exhausted

Those things may be common. They are not necessarily normal. And they may be worth paying attention to.

Final Thought

Sometimes the biggest obstacle to feeling better isn’t the pain itself. It’s believing that the pain is normal.

If you’ve been living with something for years, it can be hard to recognize it as a problem. But just because you’ve adapted to it doesn’t mean you have to keep living with it.

Sometimes the first step is simply asking: “What if this isn’t normal?”

If you’ve been dealing with recurring neck tension, headaches, stiffness, or discomfort that you’ve simply accepted as part of daily life, it may be time to look deeper.
